How to Discourage Thieves.

Uzyinka

The need for essential goods that we cannot pay for a new one led us to what we call "fairly used” items. Some people can even afford a brand new item with a lower price that will serve the purpose it is intended for effectively and efficiently but because they want to be identified with classic items, they go for "fairly used" of a high class or brand. Some people and even traders will tell you that "fairly used" goods are better than most new ones.

The problem is, what is the source of these "fairly used" items? Some of these items are stolen, and the fact that there is a high demand for these items will encourage thieves to increasingly continue to indulge in their activities.

Some people genuinely sell their valuables for various reasons, e.g they need money to meet their needs, they want to buy a higher or better one, they want to dispose of items they don't need again, etc. These are good sources of "fairly used" goods. This "fairly used" items can be source within a country or imported. The fact that demand for these items is high, there is a need to ensure that the business of "fairly used" items is properly monitored and control. The government should ensure that stocks of these traders are regularly and periodically checked to ensure that they are not stolen goods. Since this is a great task and may be difficult for government agencies to effectively monitor and check this business, largely because of the lack of proper documentation of transactions among people/parties in sales of goods. For example, if a person purchases a new product and upon disposal, there is a data/record of the transfer of such items, it will be easy to verify the rightful owner at any particular time. This will discourage stealing. Also, if a person that engages in "fairly used" items business knows that any government agent can walk into his shop and demand a source of his stock and verify that they are not stolen items, they wouldn't buy stolen goods and stock them for sales. This will discourage thieves, as most of them sell items/properties they stole.

Finally, if members of society go for new things or only buy things they know it's the source, stealing will be greatly reduced. Note that buying stolen goods has sent many to prison and even some have been charged with murder for buying items of armed robbery.
